Coming Home

Every Fall, Furman alumni make an annual pilgrimage back to Greenville for a weekend filled with friends and tradition. Forbes recently named Furman one of America’s Top Colleges, ranking #19 in the South and #83 in the over list of 100 schools. There’s no doubt as to how or why Furman made the elusive list. The university not only offers a top notch education for their students but also a bustling student life where bonds form fast between friends. During Homecoming, these proud alumni leave their day to day routine behind and travel back to their ‘college town’ to relive their youth. It’s amazing to watch our lobby come to life as friends from around the country gather for a weekend of fun.

Even though the university will have a plethora of alumni events for their former students to attend, we suggest spending some time downtown and seeing how Greenville has changed over the years.  If you’re arriving on Friday, we suggest catching up with friends at The Lazy Goat , located conveniently right outside of our lobby. With a relaxed atmosphere, tapas style servings, and attentive staff, The Lazy Goat is the perfect venue for meeting close friends before a big weekend on the town. Saturday morning, if you’re in need of a little pick me up before the big game, swing by Tealoha or Moe Joe to recharge with a delicious caffeinated (or decaffeinated) beverage. Saturday night is our town’s night to shine! If you’re in the mood for some piano dueling fun head over to Jack n’ Diane’s. If you’d you rather spend the night playing darts and pool, check out Barley’s! Dancing diva? Head over to Ford’s. End the weekend on a high note with Sunday brunch in Falls Park at Passerelle  or along the river at Blue’s Boulevard.

However you decide to spend Homecoming weekend, we are glad you decided to spend it with us at RiverPlace- see you soon!

Battle of the Palmetto State

As soon as the Thanksgiving turkey is taken off the dinner table, everyone’s mind centers around the annual Clemson-Carolina Game.

…Or the Carolina-Clemson Game, it depends on who you ask really.

Rightfully dubbed the  “Battle of the Palmetto State”,  this epic rivalry has been making  South Carolinians (and everyone else) take sides since the late 1880’s. The fact that is it the third longest continuous rivalry in college football history and that the universities are only 132 miles apart help fuel the competitive fire. Just outside true Clemsostate riv.n territory, Greenville is the perfect gathering place for those who don’t have tickets to the big game. Locals and visitor dawn their Clemson orange or Carolina garnet garb and head to some their favorite spots to watch the big game with hopes of winning bragging rights until next year’s brawl on the ball field battle.

There are numerous places to watch the game in downtown Greenville, everywhere from our lobby to the swankiest of restaurants will be packed. For the true fan that wants to surround them-self with team memorabilia Carolina Ale House on Main Street is the perfect game viewing venue. With TVs on every wall, hot wings on the menu, and beer on tap, even the least enthusiastic of sports fans are sure to have a good time. Mac’s Speed Shop is sure to be packed with fans for the big event- our sales team highly suggest their chicken nachos and onion rings for game time snacking!  Fido all dressed up for the game too? At Mac’s you more than welcome to bring your pup if the weather is nice enough to sit outside on their dog friendly patio.

No matter where you end up watching the game, remember it is just a game. There’s always next year to win bragging right and baseball season is just around the corner! Win or lose, you still got to stay at RiverPlace, which is always a win- we’ll see you at check in!

Fall for Greenville: A Taste of Our Town

To quote Anne of Green Gables:

“I’m so glad that I live in a world where there are Octobers”

In the South, October brings relief from the sweltering summers that usually carry on long after the “First Day of Fall”. It seems as if over night October brings a wave of cooler air and festive feelings to our city as we begin to prepare for what some call the ‘Season of Eating’. With Halloween candy, Thanksgiving dinners, and Christmas feasts in our future it seems only fitting that we kick off the fall season with our favorite food festival “Fall for Greenville”.

Fall for Greenville is the largest free admission, street food festival in the Southeast. A tradition that started many years ago, Fall for Greenville kicks off autumn in the Upstate on Friday, October 10th and ends that Sunday evening. Although the festival seems like a short weekend, it is jam packed with fun for all age and a plethora of food. Over 40 of Greenville’s finest restaurants participate as vendors along eight blocks Main Street. Visit the website below for a list of all food vendors. A few of our RiverPlace Team favorites include Funneldelicious (great for the kiddos!), Mac’s Speed Shop, and Sobey’s New South Cuisine.

Come for the food, stay for the music…and the competition.

Over the weekend there will be 60 music performances from some local and regional favorites including Ken Knox & Company, The Piedmont Boys, Mac Arnold & Plate Full O’Blues, and many more. Does football season bring out your competitive side? We’ve got you covered! All weekend long you can vote for your favorite vendors to win the Tent Decorating Contest and U.S. Foods Silver Spoon Award. Cheer on some of Greenville’s finest serving staff as they take on the the annual “Waiter’s Race” challenge. Sample and vote for you favorite unique, fall themed concoctions  mixed up at the Absolut Bartenders’ Mix Off by our local watering hole heroes.

Advice from a Fall For Greenville Pro:

Bringing the family? Head out to the festivities and park downtown on South Main Street by 10:45 am. By getting there early you have a better chance of finding free parking and have time to unload strollers before the crowds start. Get tickets, wrist bands, and grab some tasty treats as you head to East Broad Street with the kids. East Broad Street will be blocked off as a Kid’s Area with rides and games for younger children. Moms be prepared, there are usually at least one or two face painting stations at Fall for Greenville, so be sure to bring head bands or hair ties for little girls with longer hair! Once the kids have had their fill at the Kids Area, start walking towards North Main Street and watch a few music performances. Make your way to Charleston Cooks! and say ‘Hi!’ to Chef Mark who will be teaching cooking demonstrations all weekend. He will help inspire you to put a southern-twist on your classic seasonal goodies for the family!

Going with friends for a fun night out? Any time is the perfect time to head down to the festival, but keep in mind that there will be more families out earlier in the day. If you have a favorite musician playing at the festival I suggest being parked downtown and buying your Tasting Tickets half an hour before their performance time. This gives you time to get to their stage and grab any food or drink before showtime. If you aren’t dead set on seeing a specific performance, any time Friday after work and Saturday around 5:30 is the perfect time to head downtown. The best part about going to the festival in a group is being able to try everything! Food plates are perfect for sharing so that everyone gets a bite or two, not to much to fill you up so you can try a variety of different restaurants and vendors. Food vendors tasting plates range from 2 to 6 tickets, depending on what’s being served. Be sure to visit the Wine and Beer Gardens set up along Main Street as well. Wine will cost you about 8 to 10 tickets and beer prices range between 5 to 8 tickets depending on the brew. No matter what you’re craving, Fall for Greenville is sure to have a dish or drink to tempt your taste buds!

Other Helpful Tips:

  • Bring cash- but don’t worry, if you run out there will be ATMs set up along Main Street.
  • If your out during the day, be sure to bring a hat or wear sun screen! The weekend weather is predicted to be in the high 70’s with full sunshine.
  • Be sure to pick up a map when you get your tickets, and come up with a game plan if you are looking specially for your favorite food vendor or band.
  • Ticket Sheets (8 tickets per sheet) cost $5
  • Wrist bands to consumer alcoholic beverages are $1
  • Come hungry!

Festival Hours:

  • Friday: 5 pm to 11 pm, last call 10:30 pm
  • Saturday: 11 am to 9 pm, last call 8:30 pm
  • Sunday: 12 pm to 7 pm, last call 6:30 pm
